After opening their 2025 Ontario Summer Football League campaign with back-to-back wins, the first-place Sault Varsity Sabercats (2-0) are riding high heading into their long-awaited home opener. Their latest victory—a commanding effort on Saturday, May 24th—came on the road in Clarington against the Knights, solidifying their strong start to the season.
Now, all eyes turn to Rocky DiPietro Field on Saturday, May 31st, as the Sabercats host the second-place Scarborough Thunder (2-0) in what could be an early season tone-setter between two undefeated squads.
What’s Behind the Hot Start?
According to the coach Jamie Antonello the Sabercats’ early-season success boils down to one thing: leadership.
“Our leadership within the team has been phenomenal,” said the team’s head coach. “Especially our 19-year-olds — they all have tremendous experience at this level and have really brought the rest of the team along and kept us focused.”
That leadership has been evident on both sides of the ball, with the Sabercats executing efficiently on offense while keeping opposing teams off-balance defensively.
Thunder Rolling In
The Scarborough Thunder are coming off a tight 20-19 win over a tough Sudbury squad, and they’re not to be taken lightly.
“They’re a big and athletic team who will certainly be our toughest test to date,” said the coach. “We’ll have to be ready for some physical football — both in defending their run game and blocking up their front seven.”
A True Home Field Advantage
This will be the Sabercats’ first chance to play in front of their fans this season — something that the players and coaches are eagerly anticipating.
“I often preach about how we have the best home field advantage in the league. Now it’s time to back that up,” the coach said. “It’s a far drive for many of our opponents and we always have a great crowd out to support. The players, coaches, and organization are excited to get things kicked off — at Rocky DiPietro Field, no less!”
Growth and Goals
Through two games, the Sabercats have already shown notable improvement across the board.
“I think we’re just becoming more efficient,” coach Antonello said. “Offensively, we’re distributing the ball and attacking the weak parts of opposing defenses. Defensively, we’re game-planning better to neutralize what our opponents do well. And our special teams improve daily.”
Keeping Focused
Despite the hype surrounding a battle of unbeaten teams, the Sabercats are focused on maintaining a grounded mindset.
“With the home opener, there will always be a bit of nerves, but our group is ready for a good game and a higher-quality opponent,” the coach said. “We’ve had a very focused week of practice, and our athletes are excited for the challenge.”
Kickoff is set for Saturday, May 31st at Rocky DiPietro Field at 12:00 p.m. Don’t miss what promises to be a thrilling matchup between two of the OSFL’s top teams.
