On Wednesday, January 8th, the Superior Heights Steelhawks took to the ice at the John Rhodes Centre for an exciting matchup against the Korah Colts in the Sault Ste. Marie Girls High School Hockey League. The game showcased plenty of action and scoring as both teams fought hard, but it was the Steelhawks who emerged victorious with a 6-4 win.
The game got off to a fast start, with the Korah Colts striking first. Victoria Elliot put her team ahead, netting her third goal of the season to give the Colts a 1-0 lead early in the first period. However, the Steelhawks quickly responded. Alexe Villebrun scored her first of the season, tying the game at 1-1.
The Colts regained the lead shortly after with a strong play from Harlee Cote, who netted her second of the season. The unassisted goal put Korah ahead 2-1, but Superior Heights wasn’t going to let the game slip away so easily. Meadow Woods brought the Steelhawks back into the game with a powerplay goal to start the second period, her first of the season, tying the game 2-2.
The action kept coming as Emily Sewell scored her second of the season for Superior Heights, giving them a 3-2 lead for the first time in the game. But the Colts quickly had an answer. Aubrey Coletti, while shorthanded, found the back of the Steelhawks’ net for her second of the season, making it 4-2 in favor of Korah.
Despite the deficit, Superior Heights showed resilience. Sophie Chilelli netted her first goal of the season, pulling the Steelhawks within one at 4-3. Then, Riley Pietramale scored her first goal of the season to tie the game 4-4.
Just ten seconds after Pietramale’s equalizer, Lily Rumiel scored her second of the season, putting Superior Heights ahead 5-4. Alexe Villebrun then added her second goal of the game and third point to further solidify the Steelhawks’ lead. The final score was 6-4, marking a thrilling and well-earned victory for Superior Heights.
The Steelhawks will look to build on this win as they face the St. Mary’s Knights on Wednesday, January 15th, at the Soo Peewee Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Korah Colts will have to wait until Friday, January 31st, to take on the CASS Huskies in Thessalon at 7:30 p.m.
