In a highly anticipated Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) week three showdown between two undefeated powerhouses, the Sault Sabercats proved why they sit atop the standings with a commanding 34–7 win over the second-place Scarborough Thunder on Saturday, May 31, at Rocky DiPietro Field.
Coming into the game, both teams boasted perfect 2-0 records, but it was the Sabercats who quickly seized control and never looked back.
Just 4:15 into the first quarter, quarterback Matti Tucker handed off to Nathan Guizetti, who broke free for a spectacular 65-yard touchdown run to put the Sabercats on the board. Kicker AJ Coccimiglio made good on the extra point for a 7–0 lead.
Guizetti struck again with just 1:18 remaining in the opening quarter, this time charging 33 yards to the end zone for his second major of the day. Coccimiglio remained perfect, tacking on another point to give the Sault a 14–0 lead after one quarter.
The Sabercats continued their offensive onslaught in the second quarter. At the 10:06 mark, Ethan Carchidi joined the scoring parade with a 20-yard touchdown run. Coccimiglio’s third extra point made it 21–0. Less than nine minutes later, the Sabercats defense forced a safety to extend the lead to 23–0.
Guizetti capped off a dominant first half with a breathtaking 75-yard touchdown run at 1:08, notching his third score of the day. Coccimiglio added his fourth PAT, pushing the lead to 30–0. The Sault defense then closed the half with back-to-back safeties at the 58- and 32-second marks, sending the teams into the break with a stunning 34–0 lead.
Scarborough broke the shutout midway through the fourth quarter when Josh Martin sprinted for a 25-yard touchdown. Ky-mani James converted the extra point, but the late score did little to change the outcome, as the Thunder fell 34–7 in their first loss of the season.
Athlete of the Game honors were awarded to the Sabercats’ standout Mateo Rodriguez-Larrondo and Scarborough’s Ky-mani James, recognizing their strong efforts in a hard-fought battle.
Sabercat coach Jamie Antonello told Saultsports that “I thought it was a great team win, we outplayed them in all three phases and earned a great victory. We defended our home field well and hopefully we can continue that next week vs the Toronto Jr Argos.”
