HEARST, Ont. – Backed by the stalwart goaltending of Justin Sullivan, his efforts lifted the Iroquois Falls Storm to a narrow 2-1 victory over the Hearst Lumberjacks Sunday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Claude Larose Recreation Centre.
The result put an end to Hearst’s nine-game winning streak.
Just after a point-blank save by the Storm’s Sullivan on a two-on-one, Iroquois Falls countered with a go-ahead marker as Jordan Mayo snagged a turnover and pumped it through Lumberjacks’ starter Owen Bonthuis at 17:43 of the opening frame.
Moving to the middle stanza, another Mayo marker made it 2-0 as he corralled a loose puck in the slot and whipped it in.
Hearst got that back on the next shift, thanks to Damien Bourdon-Lemoyne converting at 9:24 as he pressured a turnover then made a quick fake prior to ripping in a shot from the left side.
Third period play saw the hosts push for an equalizer, including getting their goalkeeper out in the final two and a half minutes for an extra attacker.
However, Sullivan stood tall, shutting the door in securing the road victory for Iroquois Falls.
Away dates against two of the hottest teams in the league await both clubs in their next contests as the Lumberjacks hit the road to take on the NOJHL-leading Greater Sudbury Cubs Thursday, while the Storm travel to Michigan Friday to meet the Soo Eagles.
