IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Sunday afternoon Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Jus Jordan Arena saw the Iroquois Falls Storm collect a 5-3 victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners, in a back-and-forth affair.
Converting on a power play, 14 minutes into the match-up, the home side’s Andre Cho muscled his way past a defender on the side boards then wired a shot off the post and in past Kirkland Lake netminder Mason Janicki.
The Storm then took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission courtesy of Landon Trethewey, who stuffed in a second chance off a play put into the crease by Jaden Lyons.
Cutting into the deficit, Gold Miners’ defenceman Colin Tingay pumped in an attempt through traffic from the top of the left circle to put the visitors on the board at 4:38.
Building on their edge midway through the contest, Lyons found the mark for the 10th time this season as he eventually jammed in a second chance in close, after initially being denied by the pad of Janicki.
Pulling back to within one, three and a half minutes into the third, Kirkland Lake’s Jeremy Schoenborn got a piece of a Trent Nobes wrister from up high, moments into a power play.
They then tied it at 7:34 compliments of a James Cullison attempt from the right point that was eventually knocked in by a diving Inde Abresch just as the puck was crossing the goal line.
Regrouping, the Storm went back in front just over a minute later thanks to Connor Desbois’ first of the season.
After a close call at the blueline that was ruled onside, Desbois worked his way to the top of the crease and lifted in a down-low set-up from Carter Jamieson.
Going back up by two, Alexandre St. Pierre struck shorthanded as he chipped the puck ahead, stepped around a defender, and raced in alone where he tucked a backhand through the legs of Janicki.
That proved to be the day’s final tally as Iroquois Falls skated away with the win.
