IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Some key contributions by multiple members of the Iroquois Falls Storm saw them lead the way in an important 9-4 triumph over the Espanola Paper Kings Saturday evening in a chippy, penalty-filled, Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Jus Jordan Arena.
With the outcome, the two teams are now tied for eighth in the NOJHL standings, in a race for a playoff spot, with four regular season games remaining for each club.
A solid start saw the Storm take an early lead as Andrew Cho generated a rush out of his own zone that led to him driving hard to the net and taking it wide before putting the puck past Paper Kings starter James Meredith, a minute and a half into the proceedings.
Adding another while on a man advantage, Iroquois Falls worked it around and saw Landon Trethewey move into the left circle, then put a pass over to an unmarked Jack Jarvis in the slot, that he quickly blasted in at 14:28.
Espanola got one back late in the stanza when Grant Booth ran a point streak to four as he wired a sharp wrist shot past Storm netminder Justin Sullivan.
A free-wheeling second stanza saw eight goals scored in the session.
The visitors drew level when Tyler Thompson wired a wrister through a screen from the high slot to knot the affair at 2-2.
Retaking the lead at 5:50, Cho won a draw right to teammate Ben Sherwin, who promptly snapped it in.
Striking once more, John Adlys made it 4-2, just 38 seconds later, when he found the range off an attempt through traffic from the point.
The tallies kept coming from there as Booth connected from in-close on a two-man advantage, only to see Trethewey counter that by redirecting a Martin Brusoe shot that came from just inside the blueline.
Converting on a power play, the Paper Kings moved closer when Ashton Pitawanakwat slammed in blocked shot from Aidan Rufa that came right to him.
Continuing to exchange markers, the Storm’s Carter Jamieson worked his way to the slot from the left side and sent a sizzler upstairs.
Tacking on another, Jaden Lyons made it 7-4 after 40 minutes when he beat Jack Helkie, who had entered in relief of Meredith, with a backhand.
In the final frame, the home side helped secure the victory during a power play midway through the stanza when Jordan Mayo spotted Lyons driving down the slot, who took the pass and sent it past Helkie.
Up a skater once more, Adlys finalized the result by ripping one top shelf in the late going to wrap-up the victory.
