
The Superior Heights Steelhawks proudly represented Northern Ontario at the 2025 OFSAA Boys’ AAA Soccer Championship in Kingston, joining 19 of the province’s top high school boys’ soccer programs in pursuit of provincial glory.
Ranked eighth entering the tournament, the Steelhawks faced tough competition in round-robin play, kicking off their OFSAA journey on Thursday, June 5th. In their opening match at 9:00 a.m, Superior Heights took on the Bishop Ryan Celtics of Hamilton. The Celtics came out strong, handing the Steelhawks a 6-0 defeat in their tournament debut.
Later that afternoon, the Steelhawks returned to the field at 1:30 p.m for game two against the St. Anne Saints of Belle River. Despite a determined effort, Superior Heights fell 4-0 to the well-organized Saints.
On Friday morning, June 6th, the Steelhawks delivered their most impressive performance of the tournament, earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Cobourg Collegiate Wolves. The result showcased the Steelhawks’ resilience and potential as they stood toe-to-toe with one of the tournament’s top seeds.
In their final match of the round robin later that day at 2:30 p.m, the Steelhawks faced the St. Maximilian Mustangs of Aurora. In an offensive battle, Superior Heights netted three goals but ultimately fell 5-3 in a spirited contest that capped off their tournament campaign.
The Steelhawks’ roster for the 2025 OFSAA Boys’ AAA Soccer Championship featured a talented group of student-athletes: Cam Hernden, Carlo Gamino, Cohen Hukezalie, Connor Magnan, Daikaden Gauthier, Deven Jones-McDonald, Divine Love, Dylan Wootton, Elijah Beaton, Ethan Heimonen, Gabriel Beaton, Jacob Nelson, Jayven Giosa, Maximo Eshkibok, Nathan Adams, Rahman Abiola, River Sayers, Moises Villalobos, and Varun Sagar. The team was guided by coaching staff Matthew Greco and Shawna Wootton.
While the Steelhawks did not advance beyond the round-robin stage, their commitment, teamwork, and representation of Northern Ontario soccer at the provincial level were commendable. The experience gained at OFSAA will undoubtedly serve as a foundation for future growth and success for the program.
