On Saturday, May 31st, the Sault Steelers hit the road to kick off their 2025 Ontario Power 5 Football League (OP5FL) season with a tough matchup against the Tri-City Outlaws at the University of Guelph. Despite a hard-fought effort and a second-half lead, the Steelers came up short, falling 27-14 in their season opener.
The game started with the Outlaws jumping out to a 12-0 lead in the second quarter, putting early pressure on the visiting Steelers. But Sault Ste. Marie responded with grit and determination, clawing their way back into the contest. Rushing touchdowns by Mike Reid and Brock Hoover helped the Steelers take a 14-12 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
However, momentum shifted late in the game. With just 3:30 remaining in the fourth, Tri-City reclaimed the lead, going up 20-14. Moments later, a Steelers drive ended in heartbreak as the Outlaws capitalized on an interception and returned it 30 yards for a pick-six, sealing the game with a final score of 27-14.
Mike Reid was a force on both sides of the ball, not only rushing for a touchdown but also leading the defense with six tackles. Fred Casselman added five tackles of his own in a solid defensive showing.
The Steelers will look to regroup as they return home for week two action. They’ll host the Oakville Longhorns under the lights at Rocky DiPietro Field in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday, June 7th, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
