Over the January 16th to 18th weekend, the Soo U16 Greyhounds traveled to Peterborough, Ontario to compete in the 2025 Steve Richey Tournament, which featured 24 teams from across Ontario. The Greyhounds wrapped up their campaign with a respectable 2-2 record, securing four points in the round-robin stage. Over the four games, the team scored 13 goals while allowing 12, showcasing both offensive potential and areas for defensive improvement.
The Greyhounds accumulated 36 penalty minutes, reflecting the physicality of their play throughout the tournament.
Leading the charge for the Soo were Adam Pszeniczny and Jacob Vincent, who combined for an impressive offensive display. Pszeniczny contributed one goal and four assists, while Vincent tallied four goals and one assist to share the team lead in points. Nico Bossio also had a strong showing, rounding out the top three scorers with two goals and two assists. Between the pipes, netminder Gavin Zuccato stood tall, playing all 179 minutes across four games. Zuccato finished with a 2-2 record, allowing 12 goals and providing a steady presence in net for the Greyhounds.
Soo U16 Greyhounds coach Denny Lambert told Saultsports that “I thought we played well overall. If we learned anything from the tournament it would be to play our game and when the whole team does that we can play with the good teams. Going forward our team identity has to be a relentless team that plays for 60 minutes hard. If we can do that we will win a lot of our games.”
“We know what to expect from North Bay they are very good teams and we have to be ready to play our game. Special teams will have to be pre scouted because they will be a big factor in the games so. Our overall discipline in team systems, shift length, penalties will also play into if we have success. These are big games so we have to be ready,” added Lambert.
Next up for the U16 Greyhounds will be over the January 25th and 26th weekend when they host the North Bay U16 Trappers on Saturday, January 25th at 3:00 p.m followed by a Sunday, January 26th contest against the North Bay U18 Trappers at 12:00 p.m with a 12:00 p.m start. Both games will take place at the John Rhodes Centre.
