
The Soo 18U Black Sox hit the road for a doubleheader on Saturday, May 10th south of the border when they met the Grayling Varsity Kings and the Sault High Blue Devils.
In game one of the weekend, the Black Sox 18U beat Grayling 4-0 on Saturday. The Soo opened the scoring in the first after Tye Turco singled, scoring one run.
The Black Sox added one run in the second. The Vikings committed an error, making the score 2-0.
A walk by Daniel Stocco extended the Soo lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
Kolton Tremblay earned the win for the Black Sox. The hurler surrendered two hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out five and walking two. Corbin Allen took the loss for Grayling. The starting pitcher went two and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out five and walking one. Lucas DiBerardino and Lucas Carriere each threw shutout innings for the Soo in relief.
Turco went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Black Sox in hits.
Austin Schwartz, Allen, and Evan Duba each collected one hit for Grayling.
In game two of the day, the Soo Walked It Off Against Sault High Blue Devils
The Black Sox took Saturday’s game in dramatic fashion, with a 6-5 walk-off victory over the Blue Devils. The game was tied at five in the bottom of the fifth when Logan Rohe singled, scoring one run.
The Soo came back to win despite trailing 4-0 in the first.
Sault High got on the board in the top of the first inning after an error scored one run, Samuelson singled, scoring one run, and Medrick doubled, scoring two runs.
Chase Cerasuolo grounded out, which helped the Black Sox tie the game at four in the bottom of the third.
A ground out by Samuelson gave the Blue Devils the lead, 5-4, in the top of the fourth.
The Soo jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Daniel Stocco walked, and Rohe singled to right field, each scoring one run.
Hunter Thorkilson earned the win for the Black Sox. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit and one run (zero earned) over two innings, striking out two and walking one. Kavanaugh took the loss for Sault High. The pitcher went one and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs (zero earned) on three hits, striking out one and walking one. Tye Turco started on the mound for the Soo. The starter surrendered seven hits and four runs (three earned) over three innings, striking out three and walking one. Morse started on the bump for the Blue Devils. The pitcher surrendered five hits and four runs (two earned) over three innings, striking out one and walking one.
Turco, Lucas DiBerardino, and Thorkilson each collected two hits for the Black Sox 18U. Kolton Tremblay, Turco, DiBerardino, Cerasuolo, Stocco, and Rohe each drove in one run for the Soo.
Samuelson and Medrick were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in one run for Sault High. Maurer and Medrick each collected two hits for Sault High. The Blue Devils turned one double play in the game.
The Soo Black Sox 18U will travel to Newberry, Michigan to face the Newberry High School Bulldogs for their next game on Tuesday, May 12th for a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m and 6:00 p.m.
