On Saturday, May 30th, the Soo 13U Black Sox returned to the diamond at Sinclair Yards to host the visiting 13U Valley East Voyageurs for a hard-fought doubleheader.
In the opening game, the Black Sox found themselves in an early hole, trailing 8-0 after three innings. Refusing to fold, the team chipped away at the deficit and entered the bottom of the seventh down by just three runs. With two runners on base and the momentum shifting, the Sox came agonizingly close to completing the comeback but ultimately fell short, dropping the contest 8-7.
The second game told a different story—but with a familiar script early on. Once again, the Black Sox trailed heading into the final frame, this time down 11-5. However, the team’s resilience was on full display. Fueled by determination and a “never quit” mindset, the boys erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh, storming back to capture a thrilling 12-11 walk-off victory.
Coach Steve McLeod reflected on the day’s performance, telling Saultsports, “it was another good learning experience. The players need to not get so down on themselves when losing or when errors happen. We need to develop a ‘So What, Now What?’ mentality. We have the ability to score runs in bunches but need to keep our focus for the entire seven innings.”
Next up, the Soo 13U Black Sox will head to Midland, Ontario for their first tournament of the season, taking place from June 6th to 8th. They’ll open tournament play at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6th against the Oakville A’s.
