On Wednesday, May 14th in a pool ‘A’ midweek clash, the third place NOJHL (1-0-2) Greater Sudbury Cubs took to the ice against the SIJHL ((0-1-2) Kam River Fighting Walleyes looked to close out their round robin portion at the 2025 national championships at the Centennial Cup in Calgary, Alberta. With a win, the Cubs would punch their ticket into the 2025 quarter-final appearance on Friday, May 16th.
At 11:48 of the second period fires a snapshot from the top of the right faceoff circle towards the Kam River net to be tipped by Nolan Newton for his first of the championships past Fighting Walleye goaltender Ashton Sadauskas to give the Cubs’ a 1 – 0 lead. Lincoln Moore added another helper on Newton’s powerplay goal. With a delayed penalty being called on Sudbury and Kam River with an extra attacker, Easton Debray picks ups a Jeff Minetenko rebound to slide the Walleye tying goal through Cub netminder Karsen Chartier’s five hole to pull Kam River even 1 – 1 at 14:52 of the second. With Sudbury on a powerplay and a pass from behind the Fighting Walleye’s net to the left of the post, Spencer Horgan sends a pass to Lincoln Moore to register a goal in every game at this year’s national championship to give the Cubs’ a 2 – 1 win. Lucas Signoretti registered his second point of the game with the other assist on Moore’s game winner at 16:32 of the second. Kam River goaltender Ashton Sadauskas stopped 24 of 26 shots in the loss while Sudbury netminder Karsen Chartier turned away 28 of 29 shots in the Cub’s win.
With the 2 – 1 win over Kam River, the Cubs will now guarantee themselves a place in the quarter-finals on Friday, March 16th with their opponent to be named by the end of the day on May 14th while the Walleye finish the 2025 Centennial Cup with a (0-1-3) record but making history at this season’s national championship with being the first team from the SIJHL to register a win at the Centennial Cup.
