On Saturday, May 10th, the (1-0) NOJHL Greater Sudbury Cubs took to the ice in Calgary, Alberta at the 2025 Centennial Cup for their second game of the national championships against the (0-0-1) MJHL Northern Manitoba Blizzard. The Cubs were coming of a 6 – 2 win on May 9th over the AJHL Grande Prairie Storm
At 6:55 of the opening period and on a powerplay, Michael MacLean fired a pass from the top of the left face off circle to Garden River’s Lincoln Moore at the top of the right faceoff circle to sink his third of the championships behind Blizzard goaltender Taye Timmerman to give Sudbury a 1 – 0 lead. Sam Assinewai had the other helper on Moore’s powerplay goal. In front of the Sudbury crease and Northern Manitoba’s Jack Linton on his knees slid the tying goal through Cub netminder Karsen Chartier’s five hole to pull the Blizzard even 1 – 1 at 2:18 of the second period. Loughlan McMullan and Jayden Ward drew the assists on Linton’s first goal of the 2025 national championships. 19 seconds into the third, Spencer Horgan picks up a rebound crossing the front of the Blizzard crease to slide the go-ahead goal under a sprawling Timmerman to give the Cubs’ a 2 – 1 lead. Daks Klinkhammer and Nolan Newton had the helpers on Horgan’s first of the Centennial Cup.
At 14:27 of the period from just inside the centre of the blueline, Cheechoo Lathlin rifles a slapshot through traffic to find the back of Chartier’s net over the Sudbury netminder’s left shoulder to pull Northern Manitoba even 2 – 2. Marlen Edwards and Tyler Dahms registered the contributors on Lathlin first of the championships. Scoring their second straight powerplay marker and giving the Blizzard a 3 – 2 lead at nine minutes even was Brett Ward firing a soaring puck past Chartier’s catcher. Esteban Cinq-Mars and Linton set up Ward’s go-ahead goal. Sudbury’s Ben Harris cuts across the ice to fire a wrist shot at 9:31 of the third from between the faceoff circles over Timmerman’s blocker to tie the game 3 – 3. Cameron Shanks and Brady Bouchard notched the assists on Harris’ in Calgary.
With Chartier sprawled across the Cubs’ crease, Alexandre Andre picked up a rebound off of the Sudbury netminder to lift the Blizzard’s fourth into the back of the net to give Northern Manitoba a 4 – 3 lead. Edwards and Cinq-Mars added the helpers on Andre’s first of the championships at 15:30. After a drop pass from Edwards, Dahms backhands the Blizzard’s fifth goal past Chartier from the top of the right faceoff circle. Lathlin had the other contributor on Dahms’ goal at 16:07. With 1:58 remaining in the game and Chartier on the Sudbury bench for an extra attacker, Linton catches a cross ice pass from Edwards to fire a two on one into the back of an empty Cubs’ net to give the Blizzard a 6 – 3 win. Blizzard goaltender Taye Timmerman turned away 18 of 21 shots in Northern Manitoba’s first win at the 2025 national championships while Sudbury netminder Karsen Chartier stopped 29 of 34 shots in the Cubs’ first loss at the Centennial Cup.
The Cubs take their 1-1 record into a Monday, May 12th contest against the OJHL Trenton Golden Hawks in a 4:00 p.m puck drop in Calgary. Garden River’s Lincoln Moore will take to the ice against Golden Hawks defenseman Candon O’Neill and forward Devin Mauro both of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.
