SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women’s basketball team (4-8, 1-3 GLIAC) fell to the Saginaw Valley State (SVSU) Cardinals (7-5, 1-3 GLIAC) by a final score of 67-53 on Saturday, January 4th.
The Cardinals started out strong, opening the game with a 13-0 run, but the Lakers fought back with a fast break bucket down low from Grace Bradford (Maple City, Mich.) and a jumper from Breah Golden (Arcadia, Wis.). SVSU managed to pull ahead late in the opening quarter and into the second, but back to back baskets from Gracey Metz (Hartland, Mich.) helped to slow down their momentum. However, the Cardinals were able to take a 36-16 lead into the halftime break.
The Lakers let it fly to start the second half, hitting threes from Golden and CeCe Hacker (Omaha, Neb.) to propel LSSU on a 9-2 run. However, the Cardinals managed to answer with a run of their own to pull back ahead to close the third quarter.
LSSU fought back in the fourth quarter, grinding out runs of 8-1 and 11-2, but it ultimately would not be enough as SVSU held on to take the win.
Hacker and Golden each finished with 12 points while Bradford posted 10 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season which now ranks second nationally.
The Lakers return to action on Thursday, January 9th when they host the Davenport Panthers with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
