SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (8-10-1, 6-5 CCHA) fell to the Bowling Green Falcons (10-8-2, 5-4-2 CCHA) by a final score of 3-0 on Friday, January 3rd.
The Lakers came out of the gate strong, getting eight shots off as well as the first six shots on goal of the contest prior to the Falcons forcing goaltender Rorke Applebee (Chateauguay, Que.) to make his first stop of the night seven minutes into the game. However, Bowling Green was able to weather the storm and score a pair of power play goals from Ryan O’Hara and Brody Waters to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Both teams battled throughout the rest of the game with neither side giving an inch. However, despite multiple quality chances by the Lakers, the Falcons managed to ice the game away with an empty-netter from O’Hara in the closing minutes.
The Lakers will look to bounce back in game two of the series on Saturday, January 4th with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
