On Tuesday, February 11th, the excitement of high school basketball reached its peak as the junior and senior semi-finals took place in Sault Ste. Marie. Four local schools—the White Pines Wolverines, St. Mary’s Knights, Korah Colts, and Superior Heights Steelhawks—battled fiercely on the hardwood, each team vying for a chance to compete for the coveted city championship titles in the 2025 Sault Ste. Marie High School Basketball Finals.
In junior semi-finals at Korah Collegiate, the Korah Colts dominated the White Pines Wolverines in a decisive 85-21 victory. Leading the charge for the Colts was Yehya Abbasi, who posted an impressive 19 points. Teammates Nolan Caudert and Alex Farrell each contributed ten points to secure the commanding win. On the White Pines side, Christian Budd was the team’s top scorer with 7 points, while Dede Alabi added five points.
In the other junior semi-final at St. Mary’s College, the St. Mary’s Knights delivered a strong performance, defeating the Superior Heights Steelhawks 68-22. Nathan Grancic led the Knights with 14 points, followed by Phoenix Bell with 13 points and Dallas Dorazio with 12 points. For the Steelhawks, Daniel Briand scored six points, and Ben George added five points, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
In the senior semi-finals, Korah Colts earned their spot in the city finals with a commanding 81-35 victory over the St. Mary’s Knights. Erik Martone was the standout player, putting up 17 points. Gevin Grisdale followed closely with 16 points, and Nathan Higham chipped in with eleven points. The Knights, though resilient, couldn’t overcome the Colts’ offensive onslaught.
Meanwhile, at White Pines, the Wolverines fought hard to secure a spot in the senior finals with a 57-45 victory over the Superior Heights Steelhawks. Brayden Richard and Max Shillingford both contributed ten points, while Ethan McCorkell led the Wolverines with 17 points and Nick Louttit added 14 points. Despite a strong effort from the Steelhawks, it was White Pines’ balanced scoring and defensive effort that ultimately sealed the win.
The stage is now set for an exciting championship showdown. The junior final will feature the Korah Colts squaring off against the St. Mary’s Knights, while the senior final will see the Korah Colts taking on the White Pines Wolverines. Both games will take place at Superior Heights, with the junior game tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the senior game following at 7:00 p.m.
