On Saturday, May 31, the Sault Sabercats continued their strong start to the Ontario Summer Football League U16 season with a commanding 21–0 victory over the visiting North Bay Bulldogs at Rocky DiPietro Field.
Coming into the Week 3 matchup with a 1-0-1 record, the third-place Sabercats looked to capitalize on home turf against the winless (0-2) ninth-place Bulldogs. From the opening quarter, the Sault squad controlled the pace of the game, showcasing both offensive precision and defensive dominance.
At the 49.4 mark of the first quarter, quarterback Aaron Juma connected with Charles McInnis on a 21-yard pass, setting up a five-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. While the two-point conversion attempt came up short, the Sabercats quickly established momentum with a 6–0 lead.
The home team added a single-point rouge early in the second quarter to go up 7–0. Minutes later, the Sabercats’ defense made a statement for the second consecutive week. Linebacker Wesley Tait intercepted a North Bay pass and returned it 80 yards for a stunning pick-six touchdown. Nicolas Matilla added the extra point to extend the lead to 14–0.
Tait’s standout performance didn’t end there. As the third quarter expired, Matilla’s kick into the end zone was downed by the Bulldogs, resulting in a rouge and pushing the Sabercats’ lead to 15–0.
With just over two minutes remaining in the game, Juma once again showed his poise in the pocket, finding Drew Albury on a 16-yard pass. Albury followed up with a five-yard run into the end zone for the Sabercats’ third touchdown of the contest. The final score: 21–0 in favor of the Sault.
The win moves the Sabercats to 2-0-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs drop to 0-3. With another strong showing on both sides of the ball, the Sault continues to establish itself as a top contender in the U16 division. Sabercat Wesley Tait and Bulldog Thomas Ngueyo-Cote were awarded with Athlete of the Game.
The first place (2-0-1) Sabercats will now host the sixth place (1-2) York Lions on Saturday, June 7th with a 1:p.m kickoff at Superior Heights. The Sault week four contest will be broadcasted live on Saultsports TV and True North Radio.
