Over the weekend of Friday, May 16th and Saturday, May 17th, the Sault Junior Sabercats hit the road to kick off their 2025 Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) campaign. Traveling to Peterborough, the Sabercats battled the hometown Wolverines in an exciting and evenly matched contest that ended in a 21–21 tie.
The Sabercats showcased a well-rounded offensive and defensive effort. Quarterback Aaron Juma connected with Drew Albury for a touchdown through the air, while JJ Perrault powered his way to a rushing touchdown. On defense, Wesley Tait delivered a momentum-shifting play with a scoop-and-score touchdown, capitalizing on a Wolverines fumble.
Nicholas Matilla contributed in the kicking game, converting one of two extra point attempts and adding another successful point-after-touchdown to round out the Sabercats’ scoring.
Junior Sabercat coach Will Basawa told Saultsports that ‘we played terribly in the first half. Very undisciplined football and it almost cost us the game. We battled back in the second half once the players had settled down and been made to understand this is a higher level than JR football. Little mistakes can cause huge problems. We hope they take what we spoke about to heart and come out with a better start next week.”
With the tie, the Sabercats start their season on even ground as they now look ahead to their next OSFL matchup. They’ll be back on the road on Saturday, May 24th to face the Clarington Knights.
Stay tuned as the Sabercats continue to chase success in the 2025 season.
