On Saturday, January 4th, the Soo U16 Jr. Greyhounds played host to the Sudbury U16 Wolves at the John Rhodes Centre in what turned out to be a thrilling and action-packed game. Both teams provided plenty of offense, but it was the Greyhounds who emerged victorious with a 9-6 win after a rollercoaster of goals and power play opportunities.
The game started with fast-paced action, and it didn’t take long for the Greyhounds to strike. At 3:08 of the first period, forward Wyatt Jarratt fired his tenth goal of the season to give the Soo an early 1-0 lead. However, the Wolves responded quickly, and at 7:35, Sudbury’s Gillis O’Daiskey capitalized on a power play to score his seventh goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.
The momentum shifted again when the Wolves’ Sam Piette found the back of the net on another power play at 10:48, giving Sudbury a 2-1 lead. But the Greyhounds didn’t back down, and just a minute later, at 11:45, Jacob Vincent scored his fifth goal of the season to pull the game even at 2-2.
The Soo then regained the lead on a power play of their own. At 12:56, Makks Demidovich fired his eighth goal of the season, putting the Greyhounds up 3-2. However, Sudbury’s Leighton Pelletier answered with his fourth goal of the season at 16:25, tying the game again at 3-3.
The back-and-forth nature of the game continued into the second period. Sudbury started the scoring with a power play goal from Piette, his second of the game, at 3:04, giving the Wolves a 4-3 lead. But the Greyhounds came right back. At 7:40, Brett Archambault scored his second goal of the season to tie the game 4-4, and just minutes later, Jacob Vincent struck again, scoring his second of the game to give the Soo a 5-4 lead at 9:52.
The Greyhounds weren’t finished yet. Adam Pszeniczny made it 6-4 with his 10th goal of the season at 12:15, taking advantage of a power play opportunity. As the period wore on, the Soo’s offense continued to shine. At 13:41, Andrew Aikens fired his second goal of the season, extending the Greyhounds’ lead to 7-4. Finally, just before the end of the second period, Jarratt netted his second of the game on a power play at 19:15, sending the Greyhounds into the second intermission with an 8-4 lead.
In the third period, Sudbury wasn’t ready to give up just yet. Mikael Guerin scored his eighth goal of the season at 4:30, closing the gap to 8-5. Then, at 10:02, Pelletier struck again for Sudbury, scoring his second goal of the game, with an assist from Brady Carriere, to make it 8-6.
Despite the Wolves’ efforts to mount a comeback, the Greyhounds held firm. With just 45 seconds remaining, Jarratt sealed the win with his third goal of the game, securing a 9-6 victory for the Soo.
The Greyhounds’ offensive explosion was led by Jarratt, who finished with a hat trick, along with standout performances from Vincent, Pszeniczny, and Aikens. Soo goaltender Tanner Carriere also played a key role in holding off Sudbury’s offense, making crucial saves when needed.
With the win, the Soo U16 Greyhounds improved their record and will look to build on this momentum when they return to action on Wednesday, January 8th, for a midweek clash against the Soo U18 Greyhounds at the John Rhodes Centre. The puck drops at 5:00 p.m., and fans can expect another exciting matchup between these two local rivals.
