CALGARY, Alta. – The Greater Sudbury Cubs will have a day off to ready themselves for their quarter-final game Friday against the Melfort Mustangs (SJHL) at the Centennial Cup, presented by Tim Hortons, in Calgary.
That contest will get underway at 6 p.m., ET and will be streamed live on a pay-per-view basis via HNLive.ca.
Under head coach Darryl Moxam, Greater Sudbury finished in third place in their division going 2-2 while Melfort was second in the other grouping with a 3-1 mark, that included two victories in regulation and another in overtime.
Both teams are competing in the Centennial Cup for a second-straight year.
Lincoln Moore paced the Cubs offensively in round robin play with seven points, including a team-best five tallies.
Moore’s goal total was the third-highest among the 10 teams taking part.
Next on the squad offensively was Nolan Newton, who scored once and helped set-up five others, for six points.
He was followed by Samuel Assinewai, who doled out five assists in four games while Lucas Signoretti had four helpers to his credit.
As for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League-champion Mustangs, Logan Belton led them in scoring with a half-dozen points by finding the back of the net once and aiding on five more.
Ashton Hutchinson was next on Melfort with five points and had two goals.
Zac Somers and Brayden Westerlund chipped in with four points apiece, with Somers supplying a team-best three markers.
In his two wins, the Cubs’ Karsen Chartier sported a 1.50 goals-against average and a sharp .955 save percentage, but had a GAA over 5.00 in his pair of defeats, along with a .829 save mark.
Noah Beaulne only allowed one to get by him, on 10 attempts, in nearly a period of work for his side.
Mustangs goaltender Kristian Coombs meanwhile sported a 2.35 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage in three appearances to place him fifth in each category among all competing netminders.
Special teams saw the Cubs go 5-11 on the power play in the round robin and saw them handle 10 of the 14 times they were shorthanded, including not giving up a PPG in their last two outings.
As for Trevor Blevins’ Mustangs, they scored at least once on the man advantage in each of their four match-ups, going four for 20 overall.
Melfort killed off 17 of the 20 times they were down a skater.
The Northern Manitoba Blizzard (MJHL) and Rockland Nationals (CCHL) will meet in Friday’s other quarter-final at 9:30 p.m. ET.
Earning byes directly to Saturday’s semifinals, by finishing in top spot in each of the two divisions, were the Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL) and the host Calgary Canucks (AJHL).
