IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Two-goal nights from Alexandre Dubuc and Noah Szczurek helped lift the French River Rapids to a 6-2 victory over the Iroquois Falls Storm Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Jus Jordan Arena.
French River clicked first in the contest, moments into a man advantage, as Dubuc stuffed in a loose puck in front of Iroquois Falls starter Maverick Fletcher.
The Rapids then went up by a pair at 15:44 of the opening frame when Szczurek went in alone on a breakaway where he cut to his right and lifted in a backhand.
Heading to the second period, the clubs skated to a scoreless session, with French River taking their edge into the third.
There, the Storm trimmed their deficit in half, three and a half minutes in, when a stop by Fletcher sailed out of their zone, that allowed Jordan Mayo to win a race for the puck and go in on Rapids’ netminder Zachary Burleigh where he snapped a shot over the pad to make it 2-1.
Restoring their cushion at 7:35, Szczurek got his second of the night as he redirected in a Gavin Haslam point shot.
Battling back again, Iroquois Falls countered with a Jack Jarvis effort as he moved in from up top and lifted in a rising attempt from the right circle with 11:14 to play.
Going back up by two, Dubuc powered his way to the slot and wired a shot into the right corner for his second of the evening.
French River then added some insurance when Dominic Bzdyl worked his way in along the left wing, then went to the net and knocked in a backhand after an initial attempt he had was stopped.
The Rapids then capped off the result with a Michael Leetch one-timer on a five-on-three to complete a penalty-filled finish.
French River continues a weekend road trip in Hearst Saturday, while Iroquois Falls will entertain the Soo Thunderbirds in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts.
