Soaring from the on-set, the Soo Eagles struck four times in the first period and saw Mason Burkes go on to post his initial Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League shutout as part of a 7-0 victory over the Espanola Paper Kings in a penalty-filled match-up Friday, January 10th at Pullar Stadium.
Sault Ste. Marie opened the scoring five and a half minutes into the contest, during the night’s initial man advantage opportunity.
On the tally, the Eagles’ Landon Stevens snapped a shot through traffic from the left circle that got past Paper Kings’ netminder James Meredith.
Adding another at 13:26, the Soo’s Alex Povorozniouk neatly redirected a bouncing puck while parked out front, off a point shot from C.J. Zaharias.
The tally gives Povorozniouk points in 11 straight contests.
Building on that, the home side made it 3-0 when a Trent Hoppe blast hit off teammate Zach Sweitzer and found its way in from distance.
Notching one more prior to the intermission, Anden Marceau got behind the Espanola defence and took a lengthy up-ice pass while darting in before cutting to his right, then converting on a diving Meredith.
The power play aided in a fifth Soo goal when Ilian Danilov pumped in a rebound off a Cole Wreggitt point attempt for the lone tally of the second stanza.
Special teams helped the Eagles put the game away early in the final frame with two more extra-man efforts provided by Wreggitt, who banked one in off a defender’s skate, and saw Nolan Nemecek finish off some crisp puck movement from the left side.
Both clubs are back at it Saturday, January 11th as the Soo hosts the Blind River Beavers back at Pullar Stadium while Espanola entertains the Greater Sudbury Cubs at the Regional Recreation Complex.
