SUDBURY, Ont. – Rebounding from a four-goal deficit, the Greater Sudbury Cubs stormed back to dump the Blind River Beavers 9-6 Thursday night in a high-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
Coming out quickly Blind River skated out to an early 2-0 lead.
On the initial effort, YiBin Yoo tapped in a loose puck into the open corner on Greater Sudbury starter Karsen Chartier, off a chance generated by Mattis Lafond at 1:41.
A few minutes later, Keenan Conn added another one for the Beavers as he went wide on the right wing and fired a shot towards the target that glanced off the stick of Charter and went in.
After a making a goaltender change with Noah Beaulne entering for the home side, Greater Sudbury responded thanks to a Michael MacLean end-to-end dash up the ice that saw him finish it by wiring a wrist shot past the glove up Blind River goalkeeper Bronx Bodnar.
However, the visitors countered off a turnover forced by Rylan Gibbs that led to Jonah McIndoo chipping one high on Beaulne at 6:41 of the first period.
A fourth in the session for Blind River saw Conn notch another as he snagged an ill-timed attempt behind the net by Beaulne and hammered it in from a sharp angle, just before the net was dislodged off its moorings.
That led to Chartier re-entering the game for the Cubs.
Finishing off their offensive barrage in the period, on a late man advantage, Wyatt Gibson took a nice pass from Nicholas MacIsaac and buried it from the left circle.
On a delayed penalty while they were shorthanded in the middle stanza, Greater Sudbury broke out on a two-on-one that saw Cameron Shanks zip a pass over to Noah Kohan, who blasted it by Bodnar.
Striking once more, Eidan Macartney powered his way out from the corner boards and while driving hard along the goal line, sizzled a shot upstairs to make it 5-3.
Up a skater after that, Spencer Horgan got the Cubs to within one at 10:57 as he made a nice move and deposited one short-side into the top right corner, over the shoulder of Bodnar.
Not done there, they broke in on an odd-man rush and saw Nolan Newton steer in a cross-crease feed from Lucas Signoretti.
Matching that at 13:37, Newton slammed in his second of the evening after breaking out of his own zone and while working down the right side, sizzled a shot that leaked through the Blind River goalkeeper.
That resulted in Connor Dunham-Fox coming in to replace Bodnar.
The home side’s power play went to work again in the final frame and saw Mason Walker send a nifty pass across to MacLean who slammed it in at 7:03.
Horgan then picked up his second of the evening as he took an in-close opportunity from right-to-left and tucked his chance past the pad of Dunham-Fox.
Banging in his third of the night, Newton quickly pumped in a Signoretti pass for his club’s eighth straight tally as he converted on the power play to put it out of reach.
The visitors did get one back before time expired when defenceman A.J. Saadeh went to the net unchallenged and chipped in his 10th of the campaign to wrap things up.
