
On Monday, February 24th, the Korah Colts took the ice in Thessalon, Ontario, facing off against the CASS Huskies in the highly anticipated Sault Ste. Marie Girls High School Hockey League Championship game. What followed was a thrilling, back-and-forth battle that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.
The game began with an early spark from the Huskies. At 8:01 of the opening period, CASS forward Riley Reed opened the scoring, finding the back of Korah netminder Britton Notte’s net to give the Huskies a 1 – 0 lead. Mika Stewart and Rowan Cartmill assisted on Reed’s first goal of the playoffs.
The Huskies extended their lead less than six minutes later. At 7:48, Kennah Shaw scored her third goal of the postseason, with an assist from Macey Karhi, making it a 2 – 0 game in favor of CASS. The pressure was mounting, and the Colts knew they had to respond.
Just before the midway point of the second period, Korah found their first glimmer of hope. At 9:31, Journey Sayers fired her first goal of the season past CASS goaltender Cassidy Cooke, narrowing the Huskies’ lead to just one. The assists came from Victoria Elliott and Amy Clement, who were pivotal in setting up the play.
With the clock winding down in the second period, CASS struck again. With just 28 seconds remaining, Shaw scored her second goal of the game on a power play, giving the Huskies a 3 – 1 lead. Riley Reed added the assist on Shaw’s second of the game. At this point, it seemed the Huskies might hold on to their two-goal lead going into the final period.
However, the Colts weren’t finished yet. Early in the third, Victoria Elliott brought Korah back within one, scoring at 11:51 to make it 3 – 2. Elliott’s unassisted goal ignited the Korah bench, and the team gained momentum.
At 9:24 of the third, Elliott struck again, this time tying the game at 3 – 3. Emma Lewis provided the assist on Elliott’s second goal of the game, sending the crowd into a frenzy as the Colts fought back to level the score.
The tension in the arena was palpable as the game neared its conclusion, and with 3:01 left on the clock, Korah completed their comeback. Nikki Steinberg scored the game-winning goal, securing the Colts’ victory and their second consecutive city championship. Elliott and Clement earned the assists on Steinberg’s first playoff goal, which sealed the 4 – 3 win for the Colts.
With the victory, Korah not only earned the Sault Ste. Marie Girls High School Hockey League Championship for the second year in a row, but they also proved their resilience and determination in a game that could have gone either way. The Huskies, who had played with great intensity throughout the game, were ultimately undone by Korah’s relentless comeback and timely goals in the final frame.
