IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Riding the shutout goaltending of Karsen Chartier, he helped backstop the Greater Sudbury Cubs to a narrow 2-0 victory over the Iroquois Falls Storm Tuesday evening in the fourth game of their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League playoff match-up at Jus Jordan Arena.
With the triumph, the Cubs take the best-of-seven series 4-0 and will move on to the NOJHL semifinals against a yet to be determined opponent.
A late power play in the first period helped Greater Sudbury open the scoring with under five seconds remaining as Lucas Signoretti worked a give-and-go with Samuel Assinewai and cranked a blast from between the circles past Iroquois Falls goaltender Maverick Fletcher.
In the middle stanza, the clubs battled hard through a scoreless session as the Cubs carried their slim lead into the second intermission.
Play in the third period saw Greater Sudbury make it 2-0 at 5:29 thanks to Assinewai, who wheeled out from the end boards then buried one from a sharp angle.
Getting their goaltender out for an extra attacker with a couple of minutes remaining in regulation, the Storm pushed to get on the board.
However, as was the case throughout the night, Iroquois Falls did not solve Chartier, who despite their best efforts in the series couldn’t knock off the first place Cubs.
