The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday, January 20th that a trio of forwards, in Samuel Assinewai (Greater Sudbury Cubs); Owen King (Blind River Beavers) and Trent Nobes (Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) have been named its Three Stars of the Week, for the period ending January 19.
Samuel Assinewai, (F) Greater Sudbury Cubs: Running a consecutive game point streak to 20, Assinewai produced a pair of multi-marker efforts last week to help league-leading Greater Sudbury tack on two more victories and see the Cubs extend their current winning ways to 18 match-ups in succession.
The 20-year-old Little Current, Ont., product tallied twice in triumphs over Hearst and Powassan and also assisted on the game-winner versus the Lumberjacks.
Assinewai currently sits second in NOJHL scoring with 65 points in 35 outings and has now reached the 175-point plateau in his time in the league.
Owen King, (F) Blind River Beavers: Skating in the Beavers’ lone contest during the time frame, King twice tied their game against Iroquois Falls, then notched the deciding goal in the final frame Sunday afternoon, for his third hat trick this season.
Hailing from Cambridge, Ont., the 18-year-old forward collected the difference maker for Blind River for the fifth time in his club’s past eight contests. He also sits second overall, among all league skaters, in game-winners with nine.
Of his 33 goals so far this season, King has now found the back of the net 18 times in his past 11 outings, which are the most of any NOJHL player, since the end of November.
Trent Nobes, (F) Kirkland Lake Gold Miners: Helping the Gold Miners collect three of a possible four points on a weekend road trip, Nobes’ contributions aided in Kirkland Lake returning to the win column.
Following an assist in an overtime setback at the Soo Thunderbirds Friday, the 18-year-old from Uxbridge, Ont., scored twice and set-up another in a triumph over the Soo Eagles Saturday.
Pacing Kirkland Lake offensively, Nobes has points in three straight, while also providing seven multi-goal performances for the Gold Miners in 2024-25. Of note, his 16 total tallies on the campaign puts him third among NOJHL rookies.
