The Algoma Thunderbirds welcomed Anthony Berganza to our men’s soccer team on Thursday, December 12th. A highly skilled goalkeeper from Toronto, Ontario, Anthony brings over 13 years of experience and a remarkable resume of accomplishments that will undoubtedly strengthen our program.
A future graduate of Dante Alighieri Academy, Anthony began his soccer journey at just four years old. Over the years, he has played for renowned teams such as FC Emery, Vaughan SC, and Metapan Isidro in El Salvador. His career highlights include competing at an international level with the El Salvador U20 team, winning two regionals with Dante Soccer, and claiming the Golden Glove award in the OSL U21 division. Anthony’s consistency is further demonstrated by his back-to-back years of leading the Imodel league in clean sheets.
“I believe I can bring a sense of solidity and help command the back line,” Anthony shared about his playing style. “As a sweeper keeper, I love coming out and am confident with my feet, making me an extra player in the buildup.” His dynamic abilities and leadership on the field will be invaluable to the Thunderbirds.
In addition to his soccer achievements, Anthony is a well-rounded individual who enjoys basketball and music. He has excelled academically, winning consecutive awards for the highest mark in Health and Wellness. His dedication to both academics and athletics made Algoma University the perfect fit.
“Algoma’s rapid growth and development in the athletics program, coupled with personalized academic support in a small community, created the ideal environment for me,” said Anthony. “The balance between academics and sports, along with scholarship opportunities and a peaceful location, solidified my decision as a student-athlete.”
“This is a great signing for us,” says Coach Andreychuk. “Not only were we looking to bolster our already strong GK group, but to have someone of Anthony’s skill and commitment come to Algoma, it’s one of those ones where you give a little fist pump, when he tells you the news of committing. We are excited to see what he can bring to the OUA, and with CPL clubs already having interest in him, we are excited to see how far he can go both academically and within the game of soccer. Excited for him to get going as a Thunderbird!”
