This spring, top local athletes took to the hardwood to represent the Varsity Spring Steel City Slam basketball team on their quest for supremacy.
Going up against teams from all over the Midwest from the likes of Ontario, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania, the team currently holds a 14-1 record and has captured three tournament championships.
Most recently the team attended the Northern Michigan Spring Classic at the Grand Traverse Report and Spa in Traverse City.
After already being shorthanded due to a few unforeseen circumstances and injury, the Sault boys clawed their way into the Championship game.
In the finals they met a tough Abbey Elite team from Howell, Michigan and didn’t make it easy on themselves being stuck 17 early in the second half. Led by soon-to-be crowned Tournament MVP Zayn Murdoch who exploded for 22 points, Slam
stormed back to take the lead with just under 1:20 to play en-route to a thrilling 55-51 victory.
Proving to be the marquee game of the weekend. Other notable performances throughout the Spring Season include a Tournament MVP for Gevin Grisdale who has taken his entire game to the next level topped with some highlight reel
thunderous dunks.
Nick Frost who exploded for 24 first half points in the Houghton Lake Spring Fling Tournament Championship Game capped with a Tournament MVP.
Nick Louttit who has been a flame-thrower from the perimeter.
