Five local youth wrestlers returned from Thunder Bay over the April 4th to 6th weekend after a successful tournament in the North-western Ontario city.
The athletes, representing Steel City MMA’s Youth Wrestling Program, competed in the Gord Garvie Invitational tournament, which featured over three hundred youth wrestlers from northern Ontario.
Three of the SCMMA wrestlers are bringing home medals. Karthik Prashanth, Rhett Nolan and Wesley Fryia all secured silver medals with identical records of two wins and one loss in their respective weight classes. Vincent Boyle and Rohith Prashanth also returned from the tournament with 4th place finishes.
SCMMA head coach Brent Fryia was pleased with the results of his youth wrestlers. “They all wrestled really well, even in the matches we didn’t win, especially considering this was the very first time competing for most of this crew”.
Fryia explains the uniqueness of the Steel City Youth program, and his plans to bring a bigger team to the tournament next year “We have about twenty five kids in our program who alternate between jiu jitsu and wrestling every two months. This was the first year we brought a group to this tournament and hopefully next year we’ll bring an even bigger team to compete.”
