Timmins, Ontario – The Soo U16 Greyhounds hit the ice at the 2025 GNU18HL Playoff tournament on Friday, March 14, for an early afternoon matinee against the host Timmins Majors. The Greyhounds, looking to bounce back from a 4-2 loss to the Sudbury U18 Wolves on day three, faced a Timmins team coming off a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Soo U18 Greyhounds on Thursday evening at McIntyre Arena.
The Majors took control of the game in the second period, striking first at 6:11. Jakob Drobny fired a snapshot from just inside the center of the blue line, where Sutton Scheck redirected the puck past Greyhounds netminder Tanner Carriere through the five-hole to put Timmins up 1-0. Cameron Sutherland picked up an assist on Scheck’s second goal of the tournament.
Timmins doubled their lead at 13:59 when Drobny registered his second point of the game with his first goal of the playoffs. Positioned at the top of the faceoff circles, he sent a power-play shot past Carriere to make it 2-0, assisted by Jordan Martineau and Evan Katic.
The Soo responded late in the second period, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity. From the left of the Majors’ net, Adam Pszeniczny slid his second goal of the playoffs under goaltender Jaret Fenton-Chypyha’s right pad, cutting the deficit to 2-1 at 17:50. Finlay Escasa and Wyatt Jarratt earned assists on the Greyhounds’ lone goal of the period.
Timmins extended their lead once again in the third period. At 13:10, Mavrick Boucher skated down the left side of the ice and fired home his second of the tournament, making it 3-1 for the Majors. Drobny and Tyson Scott added assists on the insurance marker.
With just eight seconds remaining in the game, Pszeniczny provided a last-gasp effort for the Greyhounds. He split the Timmins defense, cut across the crease, and backhanded his third goal of the tournament past Fenton-Chypyha. Frankie Reda contributed an assist on the play, but the comeback effort fell short as Timmins secured a 3-2 victory.
The U16 Greyhounds will look to regroup in their final round-robin contest on March 14 at 8:00 p.m. against the (1-2) Soo U18 Greyhounds. Meanwhile, the Majors will await the winner of the U16 vs. U18 Greyhounds matchup for their semi-final showdown on Saturday, March 15, as they continue their push for the 2025 GNU18HL Playoff championship.
