After a tough 3-1 loss to the Soo U18 Greyhounds in their opening game of the 2025 GNU18HL Playoff Tournament on March 12th, the North Bay U18 Trappers were determined to bounce back. On Thursday, March 13th, they faced off against the Soo U16 Greyhounds at 9:30 a.m. in their second game of the tournament, with the Greyhounds making their first appearance in Timmins.
The Trappers were quick to capitalize on their opportunities, and it was Tyler Brunet who got things rolling early in the second period. With a turnover in the neutral zone, Brunet broke in alone, pursued by three Greyhound defenders. Despite the pressure, he fired a shot along the ice, finding the five-hole of Soo netminder Gavin Zuccato to give North Bay a 1-0 lead. The goal, which came at 5:12 of the second period, was unassisted and shorthanded.
The Greyhounds didn’t take long to respond. With less than a minute remaining in the second period, Adam Pszeniczny rifled a snapshot through traffic from the right faceoff circle to beat North Bay goaltender Carson Ruddy, tying the game 1-1 with just 55 seconds left. Pszeniczny’s goal was assisted by Jacob Vincent and Wyatt Jarratt.
As the game entered the third period, it was North Bay’s Martin Brassard who became the difference-maker. At 5:45, Brassard pounced on his own rebound after Zuccato made a save, lifting the puck over the Soo netminder’s left pad to give the Trappers a 2-1 lead. Owen Head earned the assist on the go-ahead goal.
With time winding down and the Greyhounds pressing with an extra attacker, Colton Loiselle sealed the victory for North Bay. At 17:23, Loiselle fired an unassisted empty-net goal from behind his own blueline, making it 3-1. Brassard added another empty-net goal at 19:04 from the top of the right faceoff circle, with assists from Benjamin Brunton and Cameron Lockhart, making the final score 4-1 in favor of the Trappers.
The win gave North Bay their first victory of the tournament, improving their record to 1-1. The Trappers will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next game against the Timmins Majors on Friday, March 14th, at 8:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Soo U16 Greyhounds will play the Sudbury U18 Wolves at 5:30 p.m. on March 13th, with the Wolves coming off a 2-2 tie against the Timmins Majors on day one of the tournament.
