The Soo U18 Greyhounds faced a tough challenge in their second game of the 2025 GNU18HL Playoff Tournament on Thursday, March 13th, falling to the Timmins Majors 4-3 in a hard-fought contest at noon. The Majors, coming off a 2-2 tie against the Sudbury U18 Wolves on Wednesday, proved resilient after the Greyhounds mounted a comeback in the third period.
The game began with a flurry of activity, as the Greyhounds opened the scoring with just one second remaining in the first period. Lucas DiBerardino skated down the left side and fired a shot on Timmins goaltender Jaret Fenton-Chypyha. Nathan Dupuis pounced on the rebound, lifting the puck past the Majors’ netminder to give the Soo a 1-0 lead as the period expired.
Timmins didn’t take long to respond, with Tyson Scott tying the game at 1-1 just 48 seconds before the halfway point of the second period. Scott broke in all alone on a breakaway and slid the puck past Soo goalie Nick Marson, with Jakob Drobny providing the lone assist on the goal. At 15:29, Teegan Bertrand gave the Majors the lead, firing a snapshot from the right faceoff circle that sailed over Marson’s glove. Sutton Scheck and Ethan Valliere assisted on the go-ahead goal.
The Majors weren’t done yet. Just 66 seconds into the final period, Scheck extended the lead to 3-1 with a low shot from between the faceoff circles that beat Marson. Maverick Boucher and Drobny were credited with the assists on Scheck’s goal, and it looked like the Greyhounds might be in trouble.
However, the Soo wasn’t ready to give up just yet. With the team on a five-on-three power play, coach Stevenson called a timeout to rally his troops. It paid off at 11:17, when Killoran seized a loose puck to the left of the Timmins crease and slid it past Fenton-Chypyha to pull the Greyhounds within one goal. Danny MacDonald and Dylan Rousselle assisted on the power play goal.
Less than a minute later, with the Soo still on a five-on-four advantage, Danny MacDonald tied the game at 3-3. MacDonald, positioned to the right of Timmins’ net, lifted a shot over Fenton-Chypyha’s glove to knot the score. Killoran and Rousselle picked up the assists on MacDonald’s second goal of the tournament, which gave the Greyhounds new life.
But just when it seemed like the game was heading to overtime, Timmins delivered the game-winning blow. With the Majors on a power play, Edan Etheridge fired a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle, beating Marson through traffic to give Timmins a 4-3 lead with 48 seconds remaining. Drobny provided the assist on Etheridge’s dramatic goal.
The Greyhounds fought hard to tie the game again, but Timmins held on for the victory, taking the game 4-3. The loss leaves the Soo with a 1-1 record in the tournament, while the Majors improved to 1-0-1.
Looking ahead, the U18 Greyhounds will return to action on Friday, March 14th, with a 9:30 a.m. puck drop against the Sudbury U18 Wolves. Meanwhile, the Timmins Majors will take on the North Bay U18 Trappers at 8:00 p.m. on March 13th.
