On Saturday, March 8th, the (0-1) New Liskeard Cubs hit the ice to face the (0-0-1) Soo U16 Greyhounds in Game Four of the 2025 GNU18HL Playoff Play-In Tournament at the Rankin Arena. The Cubs were coming off an 8-0 shutout loss earlier in the day against the North Bay U16 Trappers, while the Greyhounds had tied the Trappers 2-2 on Friday evening at the Northern Community Centre.
The game remained scoreless through the first period, but the action picked up in the second. On a Greyhounds power play, Wyatt Jarratt broke the deadlock at 11:17, burying the opening goal behind Cubs goaltender Matt Leitch. Jarratt’s first goal of the tournament was assisted by Frankie Reda and Adam Pszeniczny, giving the Soo a 1-0 lead. The Cubs responded quickly, as Cameron Olsen found the back of the net behind Greyhounds netminder Tanner Carriere at 13:54 to tie the game 1-1. Thomas Rannou and Ethan Roy recorded assists on Olsen’s equalizer.
The Greyhounds regained the lead in the third period when Pszeniczny fired an unassisted goal at 7:23, putting the Soo ahead 2-1. However, the Cubs answered back less than a minute later, with Kyle Cloutier scoring an unassisted goal at 8:01 to even the contest at 2-2. The Soo pressed forward and reclaimed their advantage at 13:39 when Brett Archambault notched his first of the tournament, assisted by Dreyon Boissoneau, to make it 3-2.
With time winding down and Leitch pulled for an extra attacker, the Greyhounds capitalized on the empty net. Nico Bossio scored unassisted at 17:20, extending the lead to 4-2. In the final minute, Jarratt and Pszeniczny broke in alone, with Jarratt feeding Pszeniczny for a cross-ice empty-net goal at 18:39, sealing a 5-2 victory for the Greyhounds.
With the win, the (1-0-1) Greyhounds advance to face the (1-0-1) Trappers on Sunday, March 9th, at the Northern Community Centre in a crucial 12:30 p.m. matchup. The winner of that game will secure a spot in the 2025 GNU18HL Playoff Tournament in Timmins, set to take place from March 12 to 16th.
