
The 2025 NOSSA Girls High School Hockey Championships kicked off on Monday, March 3rd, with the Korah Colts taking to the ice in their first matchup against the Lo-Ellen Knights from Sudbury. The game was a challenging one for the Colts, as they fell to the Knights in a 6 – 1 loss.
From the start, the Lo-Ellen Knights came out strong. At 3:37 of the first period, the Colts found themselves on the wrong end of a shorthanded goal, as Maddie Buchowski capitalized to give the Knights a 1 – 0 lead. Isabel Rheault and Jojo Ajueze assisted on the goal.
The Knights continued to dominate in the first period, with Sophie Gouss scoring at 11:35 to extend Lo-Ellen’s lead to 2 – 0, with Paige Taylor providing the assist. Just 1:06 later, at 8:42, Sadie Franz made it 3 – 0 for the Knights, with Amanda Sycen adding the assist on Franz’s goal.
In the second period, the Knights showed no signs of slowing down. At 11:03, Sadie Franz struck again, scoring her second goal of the game to give Lo-Ellen a commanding 4 – 0 lead. Paige Taylor earned her second point of the game with the assist.
Lo-Ellen’s power play proved deadly, as Bella Perry capitalized at 3:26 of the second period to make it 5 – 0, with Lia Gallo contributing on the goal. At 10:30 of the third period, the Knights added another power play goal when Gracie Dale scored unassisted, further increasing the lead to 6 – 0.
Despite the uphill battle, the Korah Colts kept fighting. With only 80 seconds remaining in the game, the Colts finally found the back of the net. Victoria Elliott scored the lone goal for Korah, beating Lo-Ellen’s goaltender Daniela Grottoli. Rhaya Gagne and Harley Cote earned the assists on Elliott’s goal, making the final score 6 – 1 in favor of Lo-Ellen.
While the game didn’t go as planned for the Colts, they will look to regroup and bounce back as the 2025 NOSSA Girls Hockey Championships continue. Their next match will be a chance to recover as they aim to push forward in the tournament with their game two on day one with the Colts meeting the St Joseph Scollard Hall Bears in North Bay with a 4:00 p.m puck drop where Korah were shutout 6 – 0 against the Bears (waiting for final results).
