The 2025 NOSSA ‘AA/AAA’ Hockey Championships kicked off with an exciting day of hockey as the Korah Colts, Sault Ste. Marie’s High School Hockey League regular season and city champions, opened their tournament campaign with two impressive victories on Monday, March 3rd.
In the first game of the day, the Colts faced off against the St. Joseph Scollard Hall Bears from North Bay. The action started early with Korah’s Ethan Ferguson putting the Colts on the board just 53 seconds into the game, as he found the back of Bears’ goaltender Carson Berry’s net, giving Korah a 1 – 0 lead at 10:53 of the first period. With the momentum on their side, Korah extended their lead while on a power play. Tyler Lang fired a powerful shot past Berry at 7:06 of the first period, with Koen Manchulenko assisting on the goal.
The Colts didn’t let up, and with 12:55 remaining in the second, Colton Greene scored Korah’s third goal, assisted by Nathan Guizzetti and Griffin Albert. As if that wasn’t enough, Korah added another short-handed goal at 9:33 of the second period, with Maxim Battochio finding the back of the net, assisted by Greene.
Tyler Lang added his second goal of the game with just 12 seconds left in the second period, securing a commanding 5 – 0 lead for Korah. Battochio and Greene contributed assists on Lang’s goal. The final whistle blew with Korah securing a dominant 5 – 0 victory over the Bears. Goaltender Kylan Roy earned a well-deserved shutout in the win.
In the afternoon matinee, the Colts faced a formidable opponent in the St. Charles Cardinals, who had just come off an 11 – 0 victory over the Chippewa Ravens earlier in the day. The game began with a bang as Korah’s Deago Campagna scored just 11 seconds before the halfway mark of the first period, assisted by Samuel Caruso. However, St. Charles responded quickly, with Liam Judd scoring an unassisted goal at 9:18 to tie the game 1 – 1.
The Cardinals then took the lead on a power play goal by Cameron Seguin at 17:41 of the first period, assisted by Brady Boucher and Carter Danyluk. But the Colts weren’t backing down. Just 48 seconds into the second period, Griffin Albert tied the game 2 – 2 with help from Tucker Deschamps and Nathan Guizzetti.
With just 2:31 remaining in the second period, Preston Miller gave Korah the lead once again, scoring the Colts’ third goal unassisted. As the game neared its end, St. Charles pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but with only 48 seconds left in the game, Korah’s Ethan Ferguson sealed the victory by finding the empty net, securing a 4 – 2 win for the Colts.
With the victory, Korah improved to a perfect 2 – 0 record in the round robin stage of the 2025 NOSSA Championships.
Looking ahead, the Korah Colts will play their final round-robin game on Tuesday, March 4th at 9:00 a.m. against the Chippewa Ravens, aiming to finish the round-robin stage with a perfect record.
