Over the March 1 to March 2 weekend, the Soo U16 Greyhounds welcomed the Timmins Majors to the Rankin Arena for a two game weekend of GNU18HL action, with both teams battling it out over two intense games.
The opening game of the weekend saw the Soo U16 Greyhounds take an early lead and never look back. Just 43 seconds into the first period, Blake Edwards put the Greyhounds up 1 – 0 with his sixth goal of the season, assisted by Nico Bossio and Wyatt Jarratt. The Greyhounds continued to dominate, with Connor Belanger adding another goal at 2:46 of the second period. Belanger’s third of the season, assisted by Anthony Carbone and Bossio, extended the Greyhounds’ lead to 2 – 0.
The Soo was unstoppable in the second period, with Wyatt Jarratt finding the back of Timmins goaltender Alexandre Hall’s net at the 3:51 mark. Jarratt’s goal, assisted by Jacob Vincent and Adam Pszeniczny, made it 3 – 0. Brett Archambault joined in the scoring frenzy, sinking his fifth goal of the season unassisted at 4:40 to increase the lead to 4 – 0.
Timmins responded at 12:35 with Evan Katic’s 14th goal of the season, with Kaddes Katapatuk registering the lone assist, making it 4 – 1. However, the Greyhounds answered back quickly, with Pszeniczny netting his 26th of the season on a power play at 4:49 of the second period, assisted by Jarratt and Finlay Escasa. Timmins’ Katapatuk scored again at 14:48 to close the gap to 5 – 2, with contributions from Sutton Scheck and Jakob Drobny.
In the third period, Timmins pulled within two at 3:09 with a goal from Scheck, his fourth of the season, assisted by Edan Etheridge and Malachi Gilpin. However, with just 1:14 left on the clock, Greyhound Adam Pszeniczny sealed the 6 – 3 victory with an empty-net goal, assisted by Bossio and Frankie Reda.
Game 2: Timmins Majors Prevail 9 – 5
The second game of the weekend, played on Sunday morning, was equally thrilling, but this time it was the Timmins Majors who came out on top. Jordan Martineau got the Majors on the board first at 5:59 of the opening period, scoring his 13th goal of the season with an assist from Katic.
The Greyhounds responded in the first with Adam Pszeniczny tying the game at 12:06 with his 28th of the season, assisted by Nathan Watts and Andrew Aikens. Timmins regained the lead at 15:19 when Etheridge scored his 31st goal, assisted by Martineau and Drobny. Katic extended the Majors’ lead to 3 – 1 with a goal at 17:50, assisted by Martineau and Reid Lessard.
In the second period, Timmins took control, with Lessard scoring a shorthanded goal at 6:10 to put the Majors up 4 – 1. The Greyhounds didn’t back down, with Wyatt Jarratt scoring on a power play at 6:42 to cut the lead to 4 – 2, assisted by Pszeniczny and Reda. However, the Majors added to their lead at 7:32 with Nolan Cardinal’s fifth goal of the season, assisted by Tyson Scott and Merek Plazdyc, making it 5 – 2.
Pszeniczny scored again for the Greyhounds, with an unassisted goal at 8:51 to pull Soo within two. But Timmins responded with Kaddes Katapatuk scoring his sixth of the season at 17:25, assisted by Etheridge and Noah Chamberland, to bring the lead to 6 – 3. The Majors extended their advantage further with Etheridge’s third point of the game at 2:05 of the third period, with his 32nd goal of the season, assisted by Drobny and Scheck, to make it 7 – 4.
Reid Lessard registered his second goal of the game at 8:13, assisted by Katic and Drobny, to put the Majors up 8 – 4. The Greyhounds would score one more time, as Kingston Kellar notched his third of the season at 14:24 with assists from Pszeniczny and Belanger, making it 8 – 5. Lessard completed his hat trick at 17:26, scoring his seventh of the season with an assist from Katic, to give the Majors a dominant 9 – 5 victory.
Looking ahead the Soo U16 Greyhounds turn their focus to the upcoming 2025 GNU18HL play-in weekend. The Greyhounds will compete in a four-game round-robin tournament with the Kapuskasing Flyers and New Liskeard Cubs, taking place in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, from March 7 to 9. The Greyhounds are eager to continue their strong season and are looking forward to the challenges ahead as they seek to advance to the 2025 GNU18HL post season round robin tournament on Timmins.
