The Korah Colts hit the ice with determination on Thursday, February 13th, at the John Rhodes Centre in Sault Ste. Marie for their opening playoff game against the Superior Heights Steelhawks. The Steelhawks, coming off a thrilling overtime win over the White Pines Wolverines just one day prior, were looking to carry that momentum into the postseason. However, it was the Colts who emerged victorious, securing a 4-0 win and taking a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series.
The game started fast, with Korah’s Preston Miller lighting the lamp just 52 seconds before the halfway mark of the first period. Miller’s goal, his first of the postseason, came off a great feed from Samuel Caruso, giving the Colts a 1-0 lead early on. As the period wound down, Korah took advantage of another opportunity when Dae Wood scored with just 12 seconds remaining, putting the Colts up 2-0. Tyler Lang picked up the assist on Wood’s goal, which proved to be a crucial cushion heading into the second period.
The Colts continued to dominate in the second frame. At 11:19, Koen Manchulenko scored Korah’s third goal of the game, further extending their lead to 3-0. Ethan Ferguson recorded the assist on Manchulenko’s playoff debut goal, sending the Steelhawks deeper into a hole. The Colts weren’t done yet, and Colton Greene added one more goal at the 15:43 mark to make it a 4-0 game. Greene’s goal was helped by William Pusch and Nathan Guizzietti, sealing the win for Korah in convincing fashion.
Korah netminder Peyton Melchiorre was the star of the game, earning a well-deserved shutout with an excellent performance between the pipes. Melchiorre was instrumental in keeping the Steelhawks off the scoreboard, earning a 4-0 win for his team in Game 1 of the series.
With the win, Korah takes a 1-0 series lead over Superior Heights. The teams will meet again for Game 2 on Sunday, February 16th, at the John Rhodes Centre. The puck will drop at 8:00 p.m with the Colts looking to extend their lead and move one step closer to securing their spot in the postseason.
