At the John Rhodes Centre, the White Pines Wolverines hit the ice to take on the Superior Heights Steelhawks in a one game Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League elimination game on Wednesday, February 12th.
In a tightly contested playoff showdown, Superior Heights came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over White Pines, advancing to the semi-finals of the postseason. The game, which saw two teams battle for a spot in the next round, was filled with intense moments and memorable goals.
At 2:56 of the first period, White Pines’ Wolverine Kadin Johnston opened the scoring, netting his first goal of the playoffs to give his team a 1-0 lead. Johnston’s shot came from a well-executed play, and he was assisted by Tristan Holzwarth and Rowan Wyslocky, who helped set up the early advantage for White Pines.
However, Superior Heights wasn’t content with trailing, and they responded quickly in the second period. At 8:06, Callum Peterson found the back of White Pines goaltender Ben Belleau’s net with his first goal of the postseason. The goal, which evened the score at 1-1, was assisted by Ryan Oilver and William Zuke, who each contributed crucial passes to set up Peterson’s equalizer.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 until the late stages of the contest, when Cameron Knox delivered the decisive blow. Taking a shot from just inside the White Pines blue line, Knox found the five-hole of Belleau, slipping the puck past him and giving Superior Heights a 2-1 win. The goal, which proved to be the game-winner, came with valuable help from Chad Gendron, who earned the assist on Knox’s first goal of the postseason.
With the 2-1 victory, Superior Heights secured their place in the semi-finals, where they will face off against the Korah Colts for a chance to move even closer to the ultimate prize.
