At the John Rhodes Centre on Monday, February 3rd, the second place (13-5) CASS Huskies hit the ice to take on the third place (8-9-0-1) St Mary’s Knights in Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League action.
The CASS Huskies continued their dominant season with a thrilling 7-4 win over the St. Mary’s Knights, led by an outstanding four-goal performance from Brody Kleist.
Kleist wasted no time making an impact, opening the scoring in the first period with his 26th goal of the season to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. He doubled the advantage later in the frame, netting his second of the contest to send CASS into the intermission up 2-0.
St. Mary’s responded early in the second period when Lincoln Fiser notched his ninth of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1. However, the Huskies quickly regained control, with Hayden Wells finding the back of the net for his 12th of the campaign to restore a two-goal cushion at 3-1.
Kleist continued his offensive onslaught, completing his second consecutive hat trick in as many nights to extend the Huskies’ lead to 4-1. He wasn’t finished there, adding his fourth of the game to push the margin to 5-1. St. Mary’s kept fighting, and with time running out in the second period, Rocco Gioia buried his tenth of the season to make it a 5-2 contest heading into the final frame.
The Knights came out strong in the third, as Jagur Vommaro struck just before the midway point of the period, netting his tenth goal of the season to bring St. Mary’s within two at 5-3. Owen Brown followed up with his fourth of the season, further narrowing the gap to 5-4 and setting the stage for an intense finish.
With momentum shifting, CASS needed a response, and Hayden Wells delivered. Wells potted his second of the game to give the Huskies some breathing room at 6-4. Aven Zelonko sealed the victory with his sixth of the season, securing a 7-4 win for CASS.
