The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) announced Monday that forward Kaden Wicklander (Espanola Paper Kings); goaltender Dryden Riley (Timmins Rock) and forward James Legler (Soo Thunderbirds) have been named its Three Stars of the Week, for the period ending Feb. 2.
Kaden Wicklander, (F) Espanola Paper Kings: Collecting a league-best seven points in the time frame, Wicklander helped Espanola continue their winning ways with a pair of home-ice victories.
The 17-year-old from Sudbury began by scoring four times, including notching the game-winner, while adding an earlier assist in a narrow triumph over Iroquois Falls. He then followed that up by setting up two more markers, featuring one on the deciding tally, in a win over Kirkland Lake.
Wicklander enters play this week pacing the Paper Kings in offensive production with 42 points, which puts him second in NOJHL rookie scoring.
Dryden Riley, (G) Timmins Rock: Averaging just over 37 saves in each of his two starts, Riley backstopped the Rock to decisions over the top two teams in the league standings.
Hailing from Belleville, Ontario, the 17-year-old Timmins goaltender made 75 stops in total, including multiple ones at key times, to finish with a combined save percentage of .938 in defeating both first place Greater Sudbury, and Hearst, who holds down second spot.
Riley’s overall numbers see him sitting tied for the NOJHL-lead in wins (17); tops in goals-against average (2.18); second in save mark (.925) and tied for first in shutouts (3). He’s also No. 1 in minutes played (1,456).
James Legler, (F) Soo Thunderbirds: Helping the Thunderbirds regain their form, the 19-year-old from Beaconsfield, Quebec registered five points in a two-game span last week.
Legler started off by being credited with three assists in an overtime victory versus Blind River, in which he set-up the decider. He then followed that up by notching the game-winner and adding a helper as the T-Birds got by the rival Soo Eagles.
Tied for the Thunderbirds scoring lead this season with 34 points, which features a team-high 25 assists, Legler is also now just seven games shy of 100 in his NOJHL career.
