SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (9-14-2, 7-9-1 CCHA) fell on the road to the No. 19 Augustana Vikings (15-7-3, 7-3-1 CCHA) in a high-scoring affair by a margin of 6-3 on Friday, January 31st.
The opening period of the contest proved to be action-packed with five total goals in the Stanza. Luke Mobley put the Vikings on the board first with a strike just over two minutes into the game, but the Lakers responded on the power play with the fourth career goal for Jacob Conrad (Green Bay, Wis.) at the 5:35 mark with some help from Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) and Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany). Then, just over a minute later, LSSU claimed their first lead of the night after Bryan Huggins (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Bakos helped to set up Luke Levandowski (Rosemount, Minn.) who found the back of the net.
The Lakers’ advantage would ultimately be short-lived as Simon Falk tied up the game after another 60 seconds of action, but at the 14:08 mark, Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) was able to put LSSU back in front as they took a 3-2 advantage into the intermission.
The Vikings were able to settle in during the second period, retaking the lead with a pair of goals after putting 16 pucks on the net.
Tyler Hennen managed to capitalize on a loose puck 6:28 into the third to extend the Augustana advantage, the first two-score lead of the night for either team. The Lakers continued to battle, creating multiple quality chances, the Vikings would ultimately ice the game away with an empty-netter in the closing seconds.
The Lakers will be looking to bounce back on Saturday, February 1st when they go for the series split with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m (CST).
