In a midweek clash on Wednesday, January 8th at the John Rhodes Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, the Soo U18 Greyhounds took to the ice to meet the Soo U16 Greyhounds in GNU18HL action.
All alone in front of the Soo U16 crease at 8:28 of the opening period Jackson Thornton finds the back of the Soo U18 netminder Sebastien Brassard back to give the Soo U18 a 1 – 0 lead with Dylan Rousselle adding the lone assist on Thornton’s third of the season. Caleb Walker picks up a Gavin Killoranrebound off of Soo U16 goaltender Gavin Zuccato to lift the tying goal over Zuccato’s blocker to give the U18 a 2 – 0 lead at 11:19 of the first. Alessandro Parco adds the other helper on Walker’s eleventh of the season. With the Soo U16 on a powerplay and Brassard sprawled on the ice to the left of the Soo U18 net, Adam Pszeniczny picks up a rebound of Brassard’s right pad for his eleventh of the season to pull the Soo U16’s within one at 17:56 of the opening period. Wyatt Jarratt and Jacob Vincent drew the contributors on Pszeniczny’s powerplay marker. At 6:41 of the second, Soo U18 defenseman Dylan Rousselle skates coast to coast to be stopped by Soo U16 defenseman Andrew Aikens for Alessandro Parco to pick up the loose puck to slide the Soo U18’s third of the contest to increase their lead to 3 – 1. Soo U16 forward Makks Demidovich fires a pass through the neutral zone from the Soo U18 blueline after a turnover to Jacob Vincent to skate alone into the Soo U18 zone on a breakaway to find the back of Brassard’s net through his five hole to close the gap to one for the Soo U16. Pszeniczny had the other contributor on Vincent’s seventh of the season at 12:30 of the second.
With 37 seconds remaining in the second on a Soo U16 powerplay, Nathan Watts and Wyatt Jarratt break in all alone to make three passes within the Soo U18 end for Jarratt to tie the game with lifting the Soo U16 goal over Brassard’s catcher. Defenseman Frankie Reda notched the other assist on Jarratt’s 13th of the season. From just inside the right blueline, Soo U16 defenseman Anthony Carbone rifles a snapshot through traffic to find the back of Brassard’s net over his catcher to send the Soo U16’s into the intermission up 4 – 3. Brett Archambault registered the helper on Carbone’s fifth of the season with only 13 seconds left in the second. At 8:19 of the third and Brassard sprawled across the front of the U18 crease, Jarratt found a loose puck to slide the Soo U16 goal across the goal line into an empty net to bring the Soo U16 lead to 5 – 3. Vincent and Pszeniczny added the assists on Jarratt’s goal. 46 seconds past the halfway mark of the period and the Soo U18 on a powerplay, Parco skates down the left side of the boards to split the Soo U16 defense to skate across the front of Zuccato’s crease to slide the Soo U18 fourth of the game. Cam Kontulainen had the lone assist on Parco’s eleventh of the season. Forward Bodie Belair picks a rebound in a scrum in front of Zuccato’s crease to pick up the puck to slide the Soo U18 tying goal into the back of the net at 15:35 to send the game into an extra five minute overtime. Rousselle and Dibeardino drew the helpers on Belair’s fifth of the season. With Brassard lying on his stomach and making his fourth toe save of the contest at 48 seconds remaining in overtime, Pszeniczny registers his second goal of the game with lifting the Soo U16 game winner over Brassard to give the Soo U16’s a 6 – 5 win. Jacob Vincent notched the lone assist of Pszeniczny’s 12th of the season. Soo U16 netminder Gavin Zuccato turned away 25 of 30 shots in the win while Soo U18 goaltender Sebastien Brassard stopped 23 of 29 shots in the Soo U18 loss.

After their 6 – 5 loss, the Soo U18’s will face the New Liskeard Cubs on Friday, January 10th in a 6:30 p.m start while the Soo U16’s will now face the New Liskeard Cubs on Saturday, January 11th in a 10:30 a.m puck drop at the Northern Community Centre.
