Quotes
“I thought we were better at the end than we were at the beginning. We killed off their 5-on-3 power play, but obviously we didn’t generate anything offensively. We were defending all game, and when that happens it’s hard to score. The positive is that we were better as the game went on and the players know they are capable of competing. We have to move forward; it’s a short-term tournament and tomorrow is a new day. We know we will play Saturday, and we have to try and get better through the week, so we are focused and ready on the weekend.”
Team Canada East head coach Bruce Richardson (Pincourt, QC/Valleyfield, LHJAAAQ) on a tough start to the tournament.
“There were moments where our team game was good; I’m going to take the score out of it because it’s a short tournament. As a whole, there is still room for growth in our team game; that may translate into more goals or that may translate into a more complete game. There are some good feelings coming out the game with the score, but my hope is that we look at ourselves and figure out how we can continue to get better. It’s a good place to start from but we still have to get better as a group.”
United States head coach Matt Smaby on the effort in game one.
“We gave up three power-play goals and the two shorthanded goals, so if we eliminate the special-teams goals it’s a different hockey game. We scored two goals against a really good hockey team, but we’re not winning a championship today. We have to prepare and build for the weekend, and I think our guys learned what it’s going to take to play at this level. We talked about resilience, and when we were picking this team we talked about picking guys with character and guys that won’t quit. We’re Canadian, we’re proud and we’re going to use this as motivation to grow as a team and we’ll be better for it.”
Team Canada West head coach Mike Reagan (Flin Flon, MB/Flin Flon, MJHL) trying to find positives despite the loss.
