Over the weekend of Saturday, May 24th and Sunday, May 25th, the Soo 13U Black Sox hosted the 12U Valley East Voyageurs in a four-game exhibition series in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, showcasing competitive youth baseball and early-season development on both sides of the diamond.
The Black Sox delivered a dominant performance, winning all four matchups. Saturday’s games saw the Sox edge out a tight 11-10 opener before taking control in the second game with a 9-3 win. On Sunday, the home side kept up the momentum, securing an 11-3 victory followed by a nail-biting 5-4 finish to complete the sweep.
Head coach Steve McLeod emphasized the weekend’s focus on growth and evaluation rather than just the scoreboard. Speaking to Saultsports, McLeod said, “We were able to give every player an opportunity to pitch over the weekend and assess their development defensively and at the plate. Although the four wins were a good reward for the players, we still have a lot of work to do to get ready for our first tournament in June. The coaches did see a lot of positives over the weekend and will look to build on those.”
He added, “This weekend gave the players a chance to implement the skills and team concepts they’ve learned in practice,” underscoring the importance of these exhibition games as stepping stones in the team’s season-long progression.
With June tournaments on the horizon, the Sox are looking to carry their winning momentum and continue sharpening their game. If this weekend’s effort is any indication, the young squad is on the right track.
